Living with varicose veins can mean more than being bothered by their appearance. Aching, swelling, heaviness, throbbing, and tired legs may signal that damaged veins are interfering with healthy circulation. Endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) offers a minimally invasive way to treat the underlying vein problem without traditional vein stripping.
At Vein Specialists of Geneva & Elk Grove, Dr. Kevin P. Kern has more than 25 years of experience diagnosing and treating vein disease. Having performed thousands of minimally invasive, catheter-based, and ultrasound-guided vascular procedures, Dr. Kern provides personalized treatment for patients in Geneva, Elk Grove Village, and the surrounding Tri-Cities area.
What Is Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation treats veins affected by chronic venous insufficiency. Healthy leg veins contain one-way valves that help blood travel upward toward the heart. When these valves become damaged, blood can flow backward, or reflux, and pool in the legs.
During RFA, doctors use controlled radiofrequency energy to heat and close the malfunctioning vein. Blood is then naturally redirected through healthier veins, allowing circulation to continue without the diseased vessel.
The body gradually absorbs the closed vein over time.
What Happens During Radiofrequency Ablation?
A thin catheter is inserted into the affected vein through a small access point in the skin. Ultrasound guidance allows Dr. Kern to precisely position the catheter within the vein.
Once positioned, the catheter delivers controlled radiofrequency energy along the vein wall. This causes the vein to contract and seal closed.
Treatment is typically completed in an outpatient setting and often takes an hour or less. Because RFA requires only a small access point rather than surgical removal of the vein, it generally causes minimal disruption to surrounding tissue.
What Are the Benefits of RFA?
For appropriately selected patients, radiofrequency ablation provides several advantages over traditional vein surgery, including:
- Minimally invasive treatment
- No vein stripping
- Small access site with minimal scarring
- Little downtime
- Treatment of the underlying venous reflux
- Quick return to many normal activities
- Improvement in symptoms related to diseased veins
Closing the malfunctioning vein may help reduce symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, and leg fatigue.
What Is Recovery Like After RFA?
Most patients are encouraged to walk soon after treatment and can return to many normal activities relatively quickly. Mild bruising, tenderness, tightness, or swelling may occur around the treated area as it heals.
Compression stockings may be recommended for a period after treatment to support circulation and recovery. Dr. Kern will provide individualized instructions regarding exercise and other activities based on your treatment.
Why Choose Vein Specialists of Geneva & Elk Grove?
Vein disease is the sole focus of our practice. Dr. Kern combines decades of experience with advanced diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive techniques to identify and treat the source of your symptoms rather than simply addressing visible veins.
Most importantly, your care is individualized. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to vein treatment. Your recommendations are based on your ultrasound findings, symptoms, medical needs, and goals.
