Bleeding Varicose Veins in Geneva & Elk Grove Village, IL

Bleeding from a vein in the leg can be alarming and should always be taken seriously. At Vein Specialists of Geneva & Elk Grove, Dr. Kevin P. Kern evaluates circulation problems that can lead to fragile or bleeding veins. In many cases, bleeding occurs when underlying vein disease weakens the vein walls and increases pressure inside the veins.

Bleeding from the legs most often occurs in patients with varicose veins caused by chronic venous insufficiency. When vein valves fail, blood flows backward and pools in the veins of the legs. This backward flow creates increased pressure inside the superficial veins, a condition known as venous reflux.

Why Varicose Veins May Bleed

Over time, the high pressure caused by venous insufficiency stretches the vein walls and weakens the surrounding skin. Veins located close to the skin surface may become enlarged, fragile, and prone to injury.

Even a small cut, scratch, or minor trauma can cause one of these weakened veins to rupture. In some cases, bleeding may occur after bathing in warm water because heat can dilate the veins and make them more vulnerable to injury.

Because these veins are under elevated pressure, bleeding can sometimes appear sudden or significant even from a small break in the skin.
